Construction at New Library
If you haven't been by the site of the new library lately take a look at these photos of construction taken during the end of February. The former grocery store is starting to transform into a beautiful library. Window openings are being added along the north and south facades to take advantage of natural light. In parts of the library, the natural light will filter through colored glass creating a vibrant color palette in the Lobby, Children's Area and Teen Area.

Geothermal for New Library
Due to a Department of Energy Grant, the Library Project Team revisited the energy options available for the new library. A presentation made to City Council on Tuesday, May 26 introduced geothermal technology and detailed the advantages/disadvantages of a conventional HVAC system versus geothermal heat pumps. City Council directed staff to use geothermal for the heating and cooling system to realize 20 - 25% energy savings over a conventional HVAC unit.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), geothermal heat pumps are the most energy-efficient, environmentally clean, and cost-effective systems for temperature control. Area school districts using geothermal technology have realized savings of up to 50%. The Library Project Team interviewed Energy Managers at the Arlington, Birdville, Frisco and Waxahachie school districts. All the officials highly recommended geothermal technology siting annual energy and maintenance costs.

New Library Demolition
City Council approved an early demolition package for the new library. The intent of the demolition is to expose all structural and architectural elements to facilitate the design of the building. This demolition will expose any areas of concern that are inherent to renovations/construction of existing structures. It will also allow Hidell and Associate Architects to produce accurate Construction Administration Documents to avoid unnecessary surprises or delays.
Costs include having an electrician make the building safe for demolition. All ceilings, lighting, drywall partitions, metal studs, flooring, freezer floors, MEP ductwork, conduit, wiring, fire protection system piping and equipment will be removed. Utility trenches will be saw cut and existing concrete will be removed. All waste will be recycled so that we have a "Green" demolition.

Revised Versions of Library Concept Design #7
Hidell and Associates Architects presented the various conceptual floor plans at the City Council worksession on July 8, 2008. Concept Design #7 was the plan recommended by the Library Advisory Board. Two revised versions of Concept Design #7 were created to address comments by the Library Advisory Board and library staff.

New Library Conceptual Designs
Hidell and Associates Architects held seven Library Design Workshops to involve the community, Library Advisory Board, Friends of the Library, staff and project team in the design process for the new Bedford Public Library. Each of these groups created and voted on the designs. The three designs with the most votes were further developed by Hidell and Associates Architects for review and recommendation by the Library Advisory Board to the City Council.
Hidell and Associates Architects met with the Library Advisory Board on Wednesday, July 2, 2008 to review the three concepts including two version of Conceptual Design #3 and a new one based on all the designs. At this time the Library Advisory Board is recommending that City Council approve Concept Design # 7. Hidell and Associates Architects will present the designs to City Council on Tuesday, July 8 at 6 pm. City Council will give city and library staff direction on how to proceed with the new library.

New Library Focus Group Results
Thank you to everyone who attended the Focus Groups in April for the new Bedford Public Library. The Focus Group Results will be used by our architect, Bill Hidell, to assist him during the upcoming Library Design Workshops and Town Hall Meeting. Community input is vital to building a library that meets the future needs of Bedford. Express yourself and be part of this exciting process!

Library Design Workshops
The Bedford Public Library will host a series of Library Design Workshops so that the community can actively participate in creating a vision for the new library. The workshops will be held at 2424 Forest Ridge in the old Food Lion that will be home to the new library. These workshops will be hands-on and interactive. So let’s collaborate, brainstorm and sketch a new vision for the library.
We are interested in getting the word out to the community and you can help. Please share this information with your friends, family, co-workers and neighbors. We want our new library to be able to serve the future needs of the community.

New Library Survey ends April 27th
The Library wants to meet your needs and plan for the future. We're conducting a survey to gather your ideas for programs and services to be included in the new library. If you haven't already be sure to take the survey - it ends on April 27th.

Architectural Design Contract Approved by Council
On Tuesday night, City Council unanimously voted to approve the Architectural Design Services contract with Hidell Architects and Associates. Councilman Orean moved to approve a budget of 6.6 million dollars to renovate the Food Lion Building. William Hidell has built 170 libraries and his firm has built over 200 libraries. Hidell Architects and Associates renovated the downtown Fort Worth Public Library. The firm is nationally recognized for designing the Farmington Public Library in New Mexico, known as one of the most staff-efficient libraries in the nation. Library Journal Design Institute: Going Green
I recently attended the Library Journal Design Institute: Going Green in Chicago. The Design Institute is offered free of charge to librarians who are in the process of building a new library. The North Texas Regional Library System paid for my travel expenses. In return, I have to conduct two workshops for area libraries on what I learned at the Design Institute.
The Design Institute was held at the downtown Chicago Public Library located on 400 S. State Street. It is the largest library in the world! If you ever go to Chicago, you need to see it. The library houses over 7 million materials. Patrons use escalators and elevators to move from floor to floor. As a librarian, it was wonderful just to sit in it.
Our new library project was selected for a focus group based on the challenges that we face with the new Food Lion. I was pleased to learn that by purchasing an existing building, we have already implemented a major green element by recycling. The adaptive reuse of the Food Lion will have a smaller impact on the environment since we will not be using a large amount of natural resources to build a new library.
Denelle Wrightson from PSA-Dewberry looked at the Food Lion and suggested Green solutions for solving problems. She used a covered patio to shade the front of the library from the west sun. The north side of the building was lined with windows to let in natural light without creating hotspots or glare. Landscaping was introduced throughout the parking lot to eliminate the heat island effect. High windows would be placed along the south side and strategically placed sky lights would be put in the roof. Light monitors would be installed to automatically adjust light as needed.
In order to reduce utilities, PSA-Dewberry suggested installing a Geothermal System which uses the earth to heat and cool a building. This would reduce our energy use by 50%. A highly reflective roof, would also reduce energy consumption. She also suggested harvesting water through a cistern to irrigate the landscaping. It was exciting to see all the different ways that green design elements can be used to make our new library beautiful, energy efficient and minimize our impact on the surrounding environment.

A New Library for Bedford
On July 24, the City Council approved $2.25 million for the purchase of the vacant Food Lion building located at 2424 Forest Ridge Dr. near Bedford Road.
The Food Lion will provide 37,000 square feet of space, more than doubling the size of the current facility. The new library will provide space for a larger collection, more public access computers and additional meeting space.
Several area cities have successfully converted Food Lions into libraries. These include the Carrollton Public Library located at Hebron & Josey, the North Denton Branch Library and the South Garland Branch Library.
The City is scheduled to close on the building on October 15. A Request for Qualifications for Architectural Design Services has been issued to solicit qualified with relevant design experience.
